About this market

On 21-22 August 2026 Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks with Washington and said Canada would match new US tariffs "dollar for dollar", with counter-tariffs on US steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics coming into force 8 September 2026 - after the US imposed 50% Section 338 tariffs on roughly US$20bn (about C$28bn) of Canadian goods. On 24 August President Trump threatened to raise tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel to 50% from 1 January 2027. This market asks whether Ottawa escalates again on top of that 8 September package - a further new or expanded counter-tariff measure announced on or before 31 December 2026.
